Since 50 years Mottolino is hardly working for tourism... discover the story of the company!

50 years dedicated to sport and tourism... let's discover Mottolino history! Mottolino has celebrate its 50th anniversary during the winter season 2008/2009: half a century pursuing research, innovation and services improvement, to move always with the times.

The milestones of our company are the following:

1958/59: Mottolino lift opening

The Livitur company by Quadro Curzio family, the owner of Alta Valtellina Railways, began the construction of their first lifts. Two lifts starting from Pont da Bondi up to the SS. 301. The finalization will take a long time, all materials have been carried by hand.

1964: Monte Sponda lift construction

The 1st of January the Monte Sponda lift opened, starting from SS 301: ski lift in winter and converted into a one seat chairlift in summer. In the same year it was celebrated the opening of the first restaurant at a high altitude, located at the arrival of Monte Sponda lift. It was open during the summer season too.

Year 1967: 'Ratrac' the first snowmobile

It is an important year for the Mottolino company: another lift opened, starting from Pont da Bondi up to the top of the mountain. The ski area was growing and becoming more and more interesting, together with Monte Sponda lift. In 1967 Ratrac S showed up, the first snowmobile. A modern tool ideal for the snow and slope treatment. In the same year the Mottolino restaurant opened its door at the Mottolino ski lift arrival point.

1968

Trepalle chairlift opened and the ski area extension became wider.

Livitur and Fav employees

During the winter season the 2 seat chairlift "Monte della Neve" started working. Tourists appreciated, in spring time, the great panoramic view on the valley of Livigno.

1988

The Mottolino company has been founded. The founders belonged to Rocca and Silvestri families.

08/12/90: Mottolino gondola construction

The gondola construction started. 20.000 cubic metres have been excavated in order to build a water basin for snowmaking, a garage, a warehouse for chair and ski lifts and the gondola starting point. The 28th of december Mottolino opened the gondola, managing all the Livitur ski area.

1992

The Mottolino company incorporated Livitur, becoming the only owner of the entire Ski area, 30 km slopes. Some local employers became stakeholders. The Bank of Sondrio and the Valtellinese Credit Bank supported the renewal of all existing lifts and structures.

1994

A new 4 seat charilift, with an automatic hooking system, replaced the old Monte Sponda lift, with a slightly different course that enlarged the skiable area.

1995

The old Trepalle lift has been replaced by a new automatic hooking four seat chairlift. A new parking was built hosting about 100 cars. People are able to park close to the ski resort without crossing the city center.

1998-99

The new M'Eating Point Restaurant opened at a 2.400 meter altitude. It is one of the most characteristic building of the Italian Alps and is one of the flagships of the Mottolino company. The seven rooms have been made by different local wood craftsmen and have taken the name from Livigno districts. A "pilgrimage" took place just to observe this special and spectacular building.

2000: Valfin 6 seat chairlift

The Valfin chairlift opened, going up to 2.700 meters. In Italy it is one of the first 6 seat chairlift. It was built on the north face, bringing the skiable area exploitation through the late winter season.

2001

The new 4 seat Teola chairlift began working. Due to the high grade line the construction of the structure was complicated. In addition to it Mottolino was obliged to build two elevated ways to cross the national road and a big parking area for skiers at the chairlift start.

2003: Camanel big opening

A second restaurant was realized in order to satisfy an increasing number of people coming to the Mottolino Ski Resort: Camanel di Planon, next to the Teola lift. It is the best-beloved meeting point of teenagers and young people.

2000: Snowpark first project

The snowpark started playing an important role in the Mottolino company and for the snowboard fans and lovers. It is the best in Italy and the top three in Europe. The snowmaking system improved and slopes may be ready before the winter season big opening. Mottolino has got 400 water wells and 90 generators in the service of the snowmaking program.

2006

Pemonte and Passo d'Eira lifts have been changed by modern structures.

2008

Mottolino achieved an important goal: a half century activity in terms of experience on the field. That's one more reason to continue and go further! We have tons of projects, ideas, dreams and the great Mottolino staff is working on them, always!
